As a fun and engaging website for young people,The Young Folks’ main focus is to deliver a young approach to film, books, music, television, video games, etc. to those in need of a fresh and relatable perspective. It all started in 2010 when two friends found themselves frustrated by the lack of diversity in entertainment criticism. Luciana Villalba and Gabrielle Bondi created The Young Folks as an outlet for their own voices, which at the time they didn’t see reflected in the reviews they read. It was also a way to share with their friends (and anyone else who happened to be interested) what they thought of the latest movie they watched, book they read or song they can’t get out of their head. Eventually, readers became interested in writing for The Young Folks, helping cover a range of entertainment and pop culture topics, including film, music,TV,books, and video games. Within a few years, they would have a staff of over 50 writers who volunteer articles and reviews weekly. TYF would eventually be recognized as a Tomato-approved publication for Rotten Tomatoes. Our goal with The Young Folks is to be a place that reflects the voices of our generation. We’ve learned that there is not one distinct voice that defines all of us,but a multitude that showcases how truly diverse and interesting we are as generation. We are the young folks.
