Our Techie turns 2 @Wizikey

Sahil Kapoor recently completed his first two years with Wizikey as a Front-end Developer. As one of the earliest members of our Tech team, here is his journey with Wizikey.

“I still remember interviewing for Wizikey when I was in my pre-final year of engineering. Like all the pre-final year students, I was also looking for an internship in software engineering. One night I was scrolling LinkedIn and came across Wizikey’s job posting for a React.js Developer. It was a full-time role but the requirements mentioned in the job description aligned so perfectly with my area of interest I applied anyway with no hope of hearing back.

The next morning I woke up and saw there was a reply from my current manager that he really liked my profile and was interested in interviewing me. So my Wizikey journey started with a surprise. I mean like these guys were looking for someone who has had past experience in Front-End but was still interested in interviewing me just because they liked what I was doing and thought I could be a great addition to the team, that’s quite unseen and refreshing to see. I was also surprised to see they read all the answers which were unnecessarily too long and had too many details. Which is exactly what the so-called professional guide tells us not to do. But still, they read all of them and actually asked relevant questions from those answers. It’s been two years since and we are trying our best to keep the same culture and ideology alive.

In the last two years, I have grown so much from working as a single front-end developer on the project to working with a team of 5 brilliant people, from having 10 people at the company to having 60 people, from being a 19-year-old college kid to being a 23-year-old kid,  it was quite a ride and the journey has just begun for me at Wizikey. There are so many things different about the way we work and solve problems here at Wizikey. Here are some of the things that I personally love:

Culture

Without going overboard I can just say that Wizikey has one of the best working cultures in the industry. I mean like we have all heard stories about office politics from our friends and parents. Well, we don’t have that in Wizikey. Everyone is given room and time to grow and take ownership of their work. Of course, deadlines are important but people understand that sometimes there can be other things more important and ask if they can help in any way they can to achieve the deadlines.

Transparency

Transparency is at the core of everything we do at Wizikey. The founders have made sure that we have systems in place so that every decision we make is transparent to every single person in the company and everyone is free to ask questions and give feedback. We use OKRs to make sure the quarter’s goals are properly tracked and communicated to the whole team so that anyone who wishes to can provide critical feedback on the company’s growth.

Empathy

I love most about working at Wizikey because the founders have empathy for the people working at Wizikey. The founders genuinely care about the people they work with and it’s shown in the actions they took in the past year or so. When Covid-19 hit the country and shit got real we were the first company to go remote, it was a hard decision and remote work was so new to all of us but they made sure that there were communication and collaboration systems in place for all of us.

In April this year when the 2nd wave happened it was amazing to see how the founders came forward in making sure all the people who were affected by covid are getting proper support and supply of all the necessary medication or hospital facilities. All the people affected by covid were assigned a buddy who took note of their health at least twice a day and informed the founders so that if there were anything serious they could prepare in advance. All the employees were given extra 14 days’ leave if they or anyone else in their family is affected by covid. Not only that, but the management also helped us in getting vaccinated.

On a personal note, last year my mom had an operation, the whole team was so supportive, especially the founders. They made sure I always had the current information and access to the best doctors. It really helped me get through that phase.

A place to grow

At Wizikey the growth mindset is appreciated and rewarded whether it be personal growth or professional. And this is not just true for the CEOs but for each individual at every level. My manager periodically has conversations with the whole tech team about their personal ambitions and how Wizikey can help them achieve them. He constantly motivates us to learn the newest language or frameworks that are coming out and see if it can use any of our learnings to solve problems in a better and more efficient way.

We all are foodies

It’s always nice to have foodies around you, all of us at Wizikey love eating. In fact, I think people interviewing at Wizikey are especially asked if they are a foodie or not. In the 2 years, I have managed to be an active member of a prestigious group we call Chola Bhatura Gang which handles responsibility for having periodic group lunches, gaming nights, and munching sessions across different teams so that we better know each other working in different teams. I manage this big responsibility with two of my favorite people at Wizikey Anubhav Mukherjee and Lalit Bhatt. I like to think we three bring the FUN in Wizikey.

So learning, growing, and munching pretty much sums up my 2 years at Wizikey. In the end, I would just like to thank a few people who have made this journey so amazing. Anshul Sushil, Aakriti Bhargava, Pramjeet Ahlawat, and Lalit Bhatt you guys rock.

Also, sharing some fun moments in my 2 years at Wizikey, sorry to everyone for the embarrassing photos.”
