Learn how Wizikey calculates Publication Reach and Article Reach, including recent upgrades that make reach metrics more realistic, accurate, and reliable for PR teams
If you run PR, communications, or media monitoring for a brand, you already know that “reach” is one of the most-quoted, and most misunderstood, metrics in the industry. A number gets thrown into a report, but rarely does anyone explain how it was arrived at.
At Wizikey, we believe transparency in metrics is just as important as the metrics themselves. So in this post, we’re breaking down exactly how Publication Reach and Article Reach are calculated on the platform, and the recent upgrades we’ve made to our Article Reach algorithm to make it significantly more accurate.

Publication Reach measures the overall audience potential of a media outlet or domain: essentially, how many real, engaged readers a publication commands.
At Wizikey, Publication Reach is calculated as:
Publication Reach = Monthly Visitors − Bounce Rate
Here’s what that means in practice:
It’s important to note that this calculation is based on overall site traffic, not on unique or deduplicated visitors. In other words, Publication Reach gives you a macro-level view of a publication’s audience footprint, rather than a precise count of distinct individuals reached.
This makes Publication Reach a useful benchmark for comparing the general scale and authority of different media outlets, a key input when you’re prioritizing which publications matter most to your brand.
While Publication Reach tells you about a domain’s overall audience, Article Reach answers a more specific question: how many people are likely to have actually seen this particular article about your brand?
This is a much harder problem to solve, and one we’ve recently made significantly more accurate.
At Wizikey, we’re always refining our media monitoring engine to give PR and comms teams numbers they can actually trust. Here’s what changed in our latest Article Reach algorithm update, and why it matters.
Previously, our algorithm calculated domain reach over a monthly window. But real-world content behavior tells a different story: most news articles drive the bulk of their traffic and engagement within 2–3 days of publication, after which relevance drops off sharply.
To reflect this, we’ve moved to a 3-day calculation window. This single change makes our Article Reach numbers up to 10x more realistic, because we’re no longer diluting an article’s true impact across weeks of unrelated site traffic.
Bounce Rate, the percentage of visitors who view a single page and leave, can vary widely and is often noisy or unreliable at the individual-article level.
To ensure fair and consistent comparisons across publications, we now apply a standardized Bounce Rate benchmark of around 30%, which is widely recognized as healthy for a content website. This removes volatility from the calculation and ensures every article is assessed on a level playing field.
Based on extensive testing and direct feedback from our users, we’ve also layered in industry benchmarks for Pages Per Visit and Average Visit Duration. This gives the algorithm a more nuanced, behavior-aware view of how audiences actually consume content, rather than relying on a single blunt traffic number.
Together, these three upgrades mean Wizikey’s Article Reach numbers now reflect:
The result is a reach metric that PR professionals can confidently put in front of leadership, one that’s grounded in how digital media consumption actually works, not in outdated blanket assumptions.
| Metric | What It Measures | Formula / Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Publication Reach | Overall audience potential of a domain | Monthly Visitors − Bounce Rate (overall traffic, not unique visitors) |
| Article Reach | Realistic audience for a specific article | 3-day window + standardized ~30% bounce rate + industry benchmarks for Pages Per Visit and Avg. Visit Duration |
Does Publication Reach account for unique visitors? No. Publication Reach in Wizikey is based on overall monthly traffic minus bounce rate, not deduplicated or unique visitor counts.
Why did Wizikey move from a monthly to a 3-day window for Article Reach? Because most articles see the majority of their reader engagement within 2–3 days of publishing. A monthly window understated the true, concentrated impact of an article.
What Bounce Rate does Wizikey use for Article Reach? A standardized benchmark of approximately 30%, which is considered healthy for a website, ensuring consistent and fair comparisons across articles.
Accurate reach metrics aren’t just a “nice to have,” they’re the foundation of credible media monitoring and PR reporting. With these updates, Wizikey’s Article Reach algorithm is now built to reflect real reader behavior, not outdated assumptions, giving you numbers you can defend in any boardroom.
